As I enter a new season in my life, one where I am being called into deeper intimacy with the Father, the Lord has brought up a specific scripture several times.
Matthew 6:9–13 (ESV) “Pray then like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'”
I have been reflecting on that verse a lot the past few weeks. The one part that has been sticking out to me is “Give us this day our daily bread.”
I started asking the Lord about this particular verse.
What does that mean?
I was reading in John this morning, John 4 in particular. The story about the woman at the well. It is a story I have heard many times, however this morning a verse stuck out to me that never did before.
John 4:34 – “‘My Food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.'”
It never ceases to amaze me how the Lord can bring new revelation to something that we have read countless times before.
And as I am typing this I realize that “giving us our daily bread” is exactly that. Allowing the Holy Spirit to breathe new life into something to bring new revelation each day.
However in this current season with regard to the Lord’s Prayer, this verse in John takes on a whole new meaning.
The Lord’s prayer talks about giving us each day our daily bread, and here in John, Jesus is saying that his food is “to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”
So what does that mean?
As I sit with this, this is what I feel the Lord is speaking to me about it.
When I pray this prayer, what I am actually asking the Lord for is to bring me into His will.
To invite me into where He is moving and join Him in His work.
In context of where the Lord has me at this point in time, it fits exactly.
My prayer in this season is that I would not move on my own knowing the Lord is with me, but that the Lord would allow me to see where He is already moving and to join Him in those areas.
Practically this looks like listening more and speaking less.
I guess if I had to make a point of this entire blog it is this:
God is a living and personal God. He loves you, He knows you and He wants a personal relationship with you. He isn’t interested in a cookie cutter relatioship with everyone who follows Him.
He knows you. He knows where you are at and if you let Him, He will meet you where you are and will speak so personally to you and your life circumstances that it is impossible to not believe that He is real and loves you so much.
Takes some time. Ask Him to meet with you. I guarantee you won’t regret it.
Thank you so much, Austin, for sharing your thoughts on The Lord’s Prayer. We have been studying this prayer, and it brings a different perspective than just physical food for our daily nourishment, but also the spiritual food that we so desperately need too, to carry out the will of our Father.
Truth! Thanks for sharing Aunt Sarah Beth!
